News and Commentary from Independence, Missouri

Independence City Motto: "It will be ours soon!" .......[c]2006 by Richard L Zorek....11.15.06....... Independence Missouri City Council is at it again. They need more land. They already did the "hospital/MCI thing," and then that big empty spot out on Noland Road near 23rd street, so they need something new. So, aside from the easement, they are taking an extra 6 and a half feet from yards out on RD Mize Road so they can widen the road. This will decrease the value of some of the homes that have been there long before some of the current city council members ever learned what the phrase "eminent domain" and "power hungry authoritarian" even meant. Independence resident, Patricia Sullivan, and homeowner near RD Mize, wrote in an editorial to the Kansas City Star "I think it is criminal." She may be right, but that statement is like a pat on the back to that city council.

[c]2006 by Richard L Zorek......2.5.06............The plan to move some schools out of the Kansas City School District in Independence School District is coming closer to happening if Sen Victor Callahan gets his way. Independence doesn't seem to want the new schools or responsibility. The problem they have is that Mr Westbrook and Jim Hinson are the spokesmen and negotiators for Independence School District. I saw them work together on the MCI issue and, clearly, they have no concern for what people want: just how it benefits the district financially.......

Chants, Poetry and Eminent Domain! .......[c]2005 by Richard L Zorek......11.27.05.....The proposed plan to widen I-70 from Independence to Odessa could have about 40 homes and 20 businesses in the way. Independence officials must love this. They might get to use eminent domain laws and take more homes, something they have enjoyed doing so much in the past. Oak Grove has been doing it too. Sunshine laws forbid it, but I suspect that city officials from these cities get together and have secret meetings in caves somewhere and do chants, poetry, and decide whose property they can take next. Yes, one of the members, I think, is called "Nawanda.".

Stolen Car; Stolen Wallet .......[c]2005 by Richard L Zorek......11.24.05.....An Independence man got a much lighter sentence than he should have for his involvement in some deaths while he was driving intoxicated. Why? Because his impounded car got sold for scrap metal. So, there went some evidence. Whoops. It doesn't come as a surprise for me. These impound units that the Kansas City area police departments have are little more than money making businesses. If you get your car stolen, then it is found and towed to them, you will have to pay to get it back. So, you just lost your car, it may even be damaged from the theft, now the police department is going to make you a victim again. Pay up or they will keep it and sell it. It's kind of like a person being shot, then they get billed for the bullets. And you can't argue with them. They will pull the old "don't cause a disturbance or you will be arrested" bit. And who do you have to turn to? No one. It's the way they do business. If you can afford it, you will get it. If you can't, you could get an attorney, but obviously, and they know this, that if you can't afford the impound charge, you can't afford an attorney. You lose again. I think that every one who can afford it, should file a small claim against each police department, after sending a bill to each city government. Someone has got to get the message.
